North St. Simons Island

Welcome to North St. Simons Island

Stretching from the northern roundabout to the Hampton River, the North End has the most land and the fewest people. Most North St Simons Island real estate activity is in the West Point area and Hampton Point in the far north. Also located here is Frederica, a relatively new, private luxury home development with its own golf course. Elsewhere in the North End are secluded private homes, invisible from the road. In addition to single-family homes, real estate options here include condos, buildable land (including estate lots), and both waterfront and marsh-front properties.

Our Recorded History Begins Here

In 1736, British general James Oglethorpe built Fort Frederica as protection for his first Georgia colony in Savannah. Strategically located on a bend in the Frederica River, the fort also included a small settlement—a mini colony. Soldiers from Fort Frederica later played a key role in defeating Spanish forces from St. Augustine, Florida, securing the entire Georgia territory for England. Today the fort’s remains are operated as a National Monument by the National Park Service. The park is open daily. Admission is free.

Not far away in 1820, members of the Church of England constructed the original Christ Church. After its destruction during the Civil War, parishioners eventually rebuilt the structure in 1885. Today it is the second oldest Episcopal church in Georgia. The adjacent cemetery includes graves from as far back as 1796. Nearby stands the First African Baptist Church, a national historic landmark that was originally constructed in 1869. Both are active and continue to hold regular services. Tours are available at each location.

Cannon’s Point and the St. Simons Land Trust

Founded in 2000, the St. Simons Land Trust is a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the Island’s natural and scenic character. Over the years, the Land Trust has acquired numerous properties on the island for preservation. Two of their major purchases include Guale Preserve, east of Lawrence Road just north of the roundabout, and Cannon’s Point, a huge tract to the north that includes the last undisturbed maritime forest on the island. Cannon’s Point is open to the public on a limited schedule. No motorized vehicles are permitted.

Recreational Activities

The Hampton River Marina, at the Island’s northernmost point, is a full-service marina offering fishing and educational charters, plus scheduled trips to the private Little St. Simons Island.

And of course, there’s golf. The King and Prince Golf Course, a public 18-hole championship course is located within Hampton Point.

Board your horse in The Stables at Frederica. Learn to ride, or sign up for trail rides along the beach, through the marsh, or in a maritime forest.

Visit the four-acre Frederica Park for organized field sports, jogging, a botanical trail, picnic shelters, restrooms, a children's playground, and a dog park.

Be inspired by The Farm at Oatland North, a sanctuary for retired, unwanted, abused, and abandoned animals—farm and domestic. They hold an open house most Sundays from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. You won’t soon forget it.
