Sea Island

Welcome to Sea Island

Sea Island real estate in Georgia offers gated communities and private beach access to its residents. As such, real estate on Sea Island finds its price point at the top of the real estate market for the entire southeastern United States.

This area is comprised of approximately 700 homes or cottages as they are referred to here, and less than 200 townhomes, condos, and fractional share properties. In a typical year, approximately 30 to 40 properties will be bought and sold.

Today, townhomes and undeveloped lots can be purchased for under $1 million. While Sea Island real estate prices have been affected by the recession, it is still not uncommon to see cottages selling for over $7 million.

What Sea Island Real Estate Owners Enjoy

In addition to world-class golf, the list of activities provided by the Sea Island resort is endless.

They include access to the beach club, horseback riding on the beach, charter fishing, tennis, sailing, and junior staff to watch over and provide fun and games for the little ones. There are cooking classes, wine tastings, nature adventures, the shooting school, fitness classes at the spa, and bingo on Thursday evenings. And of course, there are a number of outstanding restaurants where diners can enjoy prime-cut steaks, and seafood, or experience Italian cuisine.

In 2004, this prime location was chosen to host the G8 Summit because of its remote, easily secured location and luxurious accommodations. However, this was not the first time Sea Island played host to presidents and prime ministers of nations around the world.

A tradition at Sea Island for heads of state, a number of live oaks planted by such dignitaries adorn the grounds of the Cloister going back decades.

Living Sea Island Highlights

Reached by Causeway from St. Simons Island, Sea Island is a five-star, internationally acclaimed resort and was recently voted number one for “Best Place for a Second Home” by Barron’s Magazine.

In 1924, Howard Coffin, a wealthy northerner purchased this barrier island and named it Sea Island. In the same year a causeway leading to St. Simons Island was constructed and in turn made possible the development of the island.

With the same skill he used at the helm of the Hudson Automobile Company, Coffin laid the groundwork for the construction of a new hotel on Sea Island to be named The Cloister.

Sea Island Hotel and Resort

Designed by Addison Mizner, the hotel represented the popular Spanish Revival period. The Cloister opened in 1928 before the depression and thousands motored over from the mainland to see this magnificent hotel. Received accolades, the new hotel was a favorite of locals and visitors alike from its beginning.

A 2001 expansion saw the erection of the Lodge on the Sea Island Golf Course. Guests who enjoy the game of golf can appreciate the Golf Learning Center and three championship golf courses here.

The Seaside Course, home to the PGA TOUR RSM Classic, is a links course graced by majestic ocean vistas in the tradition of St. Andrews. The Plantation Course winds enticingly through marsh and forest, while the Retreat Course offers a uniquely dramatic and challenging design cultivated by Davis Love III.
